Women

Although they represent half the world’s population, historically women have not enjoyed all the rights and freedoms in the same way as men. Nowadays, in many contexts, women continue to occupy marginalized places in society and face a series of violations of their rights as a consequence of gender discrimination.

Over the centuries, the struggle for gender equality has taken on different forms and has enabled thousands of women around the world to exercise their rights. Unfortunately, there were also thousands of women killed in this struggle. In Brazil, the growing mobilizations of women’s movements in recent years have become known as the “Feminist Spring”. The increasing demands for gender equity coincide with a moment of regression in the rights of women headed, especially by the Brazilian legislature, mostly occupied by white cis men.

In a country with so many challenges to achieve, gender equality and one of the highest rates of violence against women in the region, women human rights defenders in Brazil need a safe and receptive environment to continue to lead their struggle for rights.
